Great video. The only one I’ve seen that showed clearly how the mechanism is removed. Love the trick to remove the spring
I have an interlock on my main panel. The generator I use is a Honda EU7000 that has a Floating neutral from the factory. The Honda EU and EM series generators have floating neutrals. The EM series have bonded neutrals.
So basically the lesson here is that it takes maybe 15 seconds with a meter to check the continuity of your cord. And probably 99% of us have never done that. We all just assumed that if we didn't make it up ourselves, that it came from the factory correctly wired. That is a dangerous assumption, more dangerous than most of us realized. Thanks buddy, I am going to go get my meter out right now.
Thanks
This very same thing happened to me when I unbonded the neutral on my generator but didn't think to check connections in plug. We fried our emp device in panel and security light and had smell in garage. I put the generator back the way it was and no issues.
@@teyyet2004 I'm certainly no expert, but I put up this video so that others would hopefully see this ahead of time.
I had a clunking from the rear mount on my 2010 Streetbob ant found it was the bolts holding the mount to the tranny - 5000 miles from new. On checking I found thewheels were out of line as well telling me that it'd not been set up correctly at the factory !

Thanks for taking the time to make and post this video. I had this happen to a friend of mine as well. It blew out a GFCI wall socket in the master bath, and in the master bedroom, a TV and a clock radio. Oddly, everything was isolated to his bedroom and master bath, though the open neutral was on the generator-to-transfer switch cord.
thanks for posting

The PanAm and Sportster S both use the 1250 RevMax engine, but the version in the Sportster is significantly detuned.
Thanks for the video I just did this on my Softail and it worked flawlessly - worth every penny!
Great job! I agree, money well spent.
thanks for the info. looking at doing this and then adding the "motorcycle drop guard" kit also which protects your chrome finish on the guards and they also include a primary guard for additional protection there.
Good choice! I just added the drop guards a few months ago.
I ride supermoto and adv bikes and have always had sheepskin pelts strapped over the seat. Unsheared ones are best as they are thicc and provide more padding and thigh contact when you’re riding the bike.
Never thought supermoto would use these. Cool!
It depends on if the transfer switch switches the neutral or only the hot lines there are some transfer switches that switch the neutral line as well as the hot lines so there is no simple rule you have to investigate what you have to make the right choice. If the transfer switches all three it isolates the generator from your house wiring completely besides the circuits you are back feeding with the generator I mean it stops sharing the bonding and ground from the main panel and so you need a ground rod for the generator and still need it to be bonded also. But if the transfer switch shares the houses bonded neutral because it only switches the hot lines then you don't need your generator to be bonded or a ground rod because it uses the existing infrastructure of the home. You only want one ground and one bonding point this is why only the ground and neutral are bonded at your first disconnect or main breaker panel in your houses wiring and they are not bonded in sub panels if you have any.
That is true, there are neural switching transfer switches.
Great comentary, good video, but dude, I didn't see you get that Rev Max engine once into the sweet spot. I rented one for a day, once you get above 5k rpms that bike is a beast. Coming from an owner of a 2013 Dyna twin cam 103, and a 2022 Heritage Classic 114 M8. You could have blown past all those other riders, on air cooled Harleys like they were walking their bikes. Take another ride of that bike, and give it the beans. I got to 130 mph, and it still had legs.
The test ride without was pretty horrible. Basically, a town with a lot of cops. I rode the Pan America CVO later that day, and I got to wind that one out a little more. I will be putting that video up soon. 130mph eh? 😵😵
From what I've seen, the marshals on group demo rides tend to frown on blasts up to 130 mph
@@kingkrimson8771 LOL, yup!
Thanks for a couple Great videos on unbonded generators and more!
Wow, thank you!
My twin cam Dyna has a fair bit more vibration than the Evo did. Causes a blur in the left mirror only. Replaced the front mount but it's the same. The recommendation is to change both, it'll improve stability if nothing else. If I shim it and the left mirror isn't a blur I'd know it was better.
It was a very frustrating process trying to hunt down the source of vibration. Front wheel balance was a factor in my case also.
What brand of motor mounts did you purchase first before you replaced them with OEM ones? I’m asking because I literally just ordered some after mkt before I saw this video.
Milwaukee Twins was the brand I tried.
@@bluesriderDF OK great, thank you and keep up the great work!
did you ensure you tightened the nut enough on the neutral lug when you removed the bonding jumper on the generator?
Yes. The loose connection in the cable was definitely the problem.
I've ridden into single digits Fahrenheit consistently, with 2 layers of gloves. My fingers simply stop working when it's that cold. I had no idea these existed, I will definitely be getting a set now!
I have different bikes now, so I added heated grips. I also don't venture out below 40°F anymore. I'm getting too old for that!
Have the same generator. Watched your two videos about this generator which are excellent. After a few years, the automatic start "on" button no longer works so I have to use the pull start cord instead. Any idea why the press button no longer starts the generator and what to do about it?
@@melanie.3837 Dead battery? You can test it with a multimeter, it should be around 12 volts DC.
@@bluesriderDF Thanks! Will do that.
I'm an electrician retired after over 40 years in the craft. The reason that the voltage went too high on those Surge Protectors is that without an intact neutral the voltage will fluctuate with the amount of loading on each of the generator's energized conductors. The most heavily loaded side will have the reduced voltage and the lightly loaded energized conductor will have the higher voltage. The greater the difference in the loading the greater the difference in the voltage. In your case the load must have been markedly different on the 2 energized conductors and that produced a destructively higher voltage across the lighter loads which must have included those surge protectors. Why that happened is that in most cord sets of under size 2 American Wire Gauge (AWG) all of the conductors are the same size including the Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC). Since the Neutral Conductor of the cord had an open connection at one end it was not carrying any current. The EGC (Grounding Conductor) of the cord had been carrying the imbalance current from the Grounded (neutral) busbar of the panel to the frame of the generator. The Main Bonding Jumper of the generator windings had been carrying the unbalanced current of the different loads the rest of the way from the generators frame back to the center point of the generator's windings. Under those circumstances both energized conductors carried their portion of the load current while the Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC) carried the difference between the current flows on each of the energized conductors. Theoretically that is the wrong pathway for that current to return to the center point of the generator's windings but nobody consulted the electrons about our theory and they don't give a tinker's dam about what we think that they should be doing. Electric current does not take the path of least [resistance + reactance =] impedance. Impedance is the sum of the resistance and reactance to the flow of AC current. AC electric current takes all of the pathways available in inverse proportion to their respective impedances. Once you unbonded the generator winding's electrical mid point from the frame of the generator the difference in the current flowing on the 2 energized conductors had no way back to the source. That shifts the electrical midpoint of the generators voltage away from the heavier loaded portion of the generator's windings and toward the lighter loaded end of the generator's windings. There are devices that are usually used to protect recreational vehicles (RVs) from failures of the RV park's electrical system. One of the things that they do is disconnect the cord from the power source if the neutral conductor develops a high impedance or goes open. Using one of those plugged into the 120/240 volt plug of the Generator will disconnect the cord from the generator if either of those conditions were to develop. Tom Horne
Thanks for the excellent explanation Tom, very thorough.
I have a question for you Tom. Would you advise against removing the bonding jumper of the generator when tied in to a residential panel that’s bonded itself ?
@joshe9518 If your panel is bonded, that's why you should remove it from the generator, so you don't have more than one N-G bond in your system, per NEC code.
So why would you un- bound the generator if your panel is bonded your transfer switch is grounded and your running a 4 prong generator twist lock plug that is grounded back to the panel and transfer switch?
@@user-xe6wh2dk8o Because NEC code requires there be only one neutral ground bond. There's lots of videos which explain it better than I can.
I think after all this, I'm going to keep mine bonded. The fact is this, it might carry load between the panel and the generator. Fact is all the wires going to the generator from my panel are 6 gauge because overkill. And all the wires for neutral and ground in the generator are the same. So what's the point.
That's a kickstand not a jiffy stand
@@scottclubb4448 The Harley manuals call it a jiffy stand. I'll go with the people that made it.
That transfer switch uses a bonded neutral. It breaks the neutral. You remove the bond if you are back feeding.
My transfer switch does not bond the neutral. My neutral is bonded at the panel, and the switch just passes that on.
Oof. Glad to see you’re still here to tell. Hope you fully recover soon!
Thanks so much. Still healing, but I've gotten back on the horse!

Yup, it's a Sporty in name only.
That's me im gonna service mine tomorrow thanks heaps. From new Zealand.
You got it!
I don't know why you stopped using a perfectly good cord. I would have just reinstalled the cord cap. Also, it appears that you didn't release the cord clamp and just pulled it apart by force so of course the wires pulled out of the terminals.
Yes, the screws were so loose that a couple wires pulled right out. The ends of the copper were tinned with solder, and that shouldn't be done the stranded wire. I still have this cable, Sometime, when I'm bored, I will cut off the solder and redo everything correctly. But for now, I wanted to get a new cable with molded ends, and the light was a nice upgrade.
@@bluesriderDF I mean the cord clamp screws. Not the terminal screws.
@@trustme7731 Oh, yes you're right. That's the first time I took one of those apart. Didn't know what I was doing.

Hey, great to see you back on the road again! Sorry I never answered your question about how many miles I have on my Sportster. To tell you the truth, I couldn't tell ya. It's been apart for years and the battery is too dead to get a reading.
